BARRETT JUNCTION, Calif. – This may be our literal first drive of the all-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser, but we’ll be trying to get one for a more substantive test as soon as possible. Our drive was restricted to a few laps of a specially created off-road course, and not even an especially long one, plus a half-hour of road time on a winding rural highway with long sweepers and hefty grades. In short, this was not the venue for a thorough or fair evaluation, even within the usually limited scope of a typical first drive event. There are two distinct versions of the 100-series, the 100 and the 105.

The decision between trims could come down to the added interior and off-road tech of the middle and higher trims. There’s an upgraded 10-speaker JBL sound system in the middle trim, and the infotainment screen gets a big size bump to 12.3 inches versus the 8 inches in the base model. The basics are all there in the 1958 model and the plush texture of its cloth seats is fantastic.

It combines a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor in the bell housing of the eight-speed automatic transmission. This combination packs quite the punch, making 326 horsepower and max torque (465 lb-ft, to be precise) comes on early in the power band. Despite being a hybrid, it sounds pleasantly agricultural, which is to say it still sounds like a Land Cruiser out on the trail. In North America, the Land Cruiser 200 series is offered with one trim level and engine, the 5.7 L 3UR-FE V8 petrol engine producing 284 kW (386 PS; 381 hp) and 544 N⋅m (401 lb⋅ft) of torque channeled through a six-speed automatic.
Class-leading advanced safety performance befitting the flagship model of the Land Cruiser series
The nicer Land Cruiser mid-trim model sports rectangular LED headlights with Chiclet-like diodes as a nod to the 1980s 60 Series Land Cruisers. The two-tone paint, especially with the white roof option, really sells the vibe. Small by today’s standards, 18-inch wheels can be upgraded to 20-inchers on the Land Cruiser trim. Land Cruiser’s full-time 4-wheel-drive system provides power continuously to the front and rear axles to improve traction and stability on various surfaces.
The standard mud flaps were at risk of being ripped off a few times as I heard them scrape the earth. They would be the first thing an owner planning to take this Toyota off-road needs to remove. The Land Cruiser First Edition adds more extensive underbody protection with skid plates for the engine and transmission, along with rock rails and a roof rack. The cabin gets a few “First Edition” logos and leather seats, as opposed to the leather-like “Softex” in the middle trim or cloth of the base model.

The automotive press in Australia were critical of Toyota's decision to offer the acclaimed 1HD-FTE engine only in combination with IFS. Australian 4WD Monthly magazine stated "We will never forgive Toyota for going independent at the front with the mighty 4.2 turbo-diesel". The 100 models were fitted with a slightly wider chassis,[57] independent front suspension (IFS) and two new engines. The change to IFS was a first for a Land Cruiser, and was made (in combination with rack-and-pinion steering) to improve on-road handling. However, it also limited the vehicle's off-road capability and durability; hence, the decision to offer the solid-axle 105 models alongside the IFS 100 models in some markets was made.

In 2002, a five-year development plan on a successor to the 100-series platform commenced under Sadayoshi Koyari and Tetsuya Tada. By 2004, ten years after the design selection of its predecessor in 1994, a final production design was settled on for the 2008 J200. Prototype related tests were conducted for over two years between 2004 and early 2007.
I could sit comfortably behind myself in the new Land Cruiser with a finger-width to spare between knees and front seat back. Headroom is more abundant than the 4Runner’s, while the seatback reclines generously. Cargo space suffers due to the hybrid system’s battery pack that raises the floor by roughly a hand-width, leaving a small, full-width bin at the cargo area’s trailing edge. Toyota didn’t provide cargo capacity, but considering that the Lexus GX’s third-row seat raises its cargo floor by a similar amount, I would suspect the Land Cruiser to have roughly the same 40 cubic feet. It was the definition of stealth wealth, because buyers could bury their money since the neighbors would have no clue it’s anything other than a weird-looking Highlander.
Toyota's New Land Cruiser Makes World Premiere
For example, the wheel to body offset imparts a feeling of strength and stability, giving the driver confidence in the capability of the vehicle... A new, more efficient engine and transmission...and advanced safety features. Toyota Safety Sense, the latest active safety package with advanced and improved functions, is standard on all new Land Cruiser grades. The range of detectable accidents has been expanded even further, enabling enjoyable driving with peace of mind.
But the GX naturally starts at a higher price, making the Land Cruiser seem like a bargain. And all it took was Toyota going back to old-school Land Cruiser designs, which are clearly on display in this new model. According to Toyota, the latter is more interested in hardcore off-roading, while the former is looking for an all-rounder that still boasts great off-road capability along with reliability and durability. Hitting those three points was the reason Toyota chose to rerelease the Land Cruiser in the U.S., claiming a return to its roots.
Toyota calls it an “off-road cruise control.” And, yeah, that sounds about right. It confidently got the Land Cruiser over rocks, muddy ruts, babbling brooks, and up and down steep hills. Crawl Control has been available on previous Land Cruisers but was hardly useful until this latest iteration. Prior versions of the tech didn’t inspire confidence with choppy, chatter-prone performance.

It proceeded to climb like a billy goat, and, even though I tried, I couldn’t get the suspension to bottom out. The LC gets a double wishbone suspension out front with a stabilizer bar disconnect on the higher trims and multi-link coil spring rear. There will be three available trims at launch, from the base 1958 model to the simple but confusingly named Land Cruiser middle trim. The top-of-the-line model is called the First Edition, and it’s limited to 5,000 units for 2024.
The LC is big, and you’ll feel every bit of its mass as you tackle trails. The new Land Cruiser is so adept at going off-road that it feels like cheating. The Toyota SUV that returned is not the same as the one that left, and I don’t mean that metaphorically. This U.S.-spec Land Cruiser is the 250 series, known as the Land Cruiser Prado in nearly all markets abroad. The previous available model was the Land Cruiser 200 series, which was succeeded by the comparatively burlier 300 series. Toyota chose to bring the Land Cruiser 300 to the States only as the Lexus LX 600.
Toyota insists there won’t be much overlap in their sales, and I am cautiously inclined to agree; after all, a Land Cruiser buyer is not the same as that of a 4Runner. The new Land Cruiser has adopted the latest Toyota Safety Sense active safety package with additional advanced functions. Two functions have been added to the pre-collision system that helps avoid a collision or reduce damage by detecting pedestrians (daytime and nighttime) and cyclists (daytime). The first is a function that detects oncoming vehicles at intersections and oncoming pedestrians crossing the street when the vehicle is turning in either direction.
It’s likely some fans will remain upset that the 300 Series is not available in the U.S., but this Land Cruiser almost seems to shrug that off and is an easy contender for one of the best SUVs on the market right now. Toyota set out to take the Land Cruiser back to its roots and it largely succeeded. It may be a smaller Land Cruiser, but it’s just as capable as ever, if not more.
